More Than a Music Legend
There are very few people whose influence extends far beyond the profession that made them famous. Dolly Parton was one of those rare individuals. The world knew her as a singer, songwriter, performer, actress, and entertainer. Her accomplishments within the music industry alone would have secured her place in history. Yet what made Dolly truly special was not simply her talent. It was the way she carried herself throughout her life.
She never seemed to forget where she came from. Born in the mountains of East Tennessee and raised in poverty, Dolly rose to extraordinary success while remaining connected to her roots, her values, and her community. Through decades of fame, she remained unmistakably Dolly. That authenticity made her beloved far beyond the world of music.
Discovering Tennessee
When I moved to Tennessee a couple of years ago, I was eagerly beginning an exciting new chapter in my own life. As a native Texan, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. What I quickly discovered was a culture built around kindness, generosity, and genuine hospitality. The phrase “Southern Hospitality” is often used casually, but throughout Tennessee I have found it to be very real. From Memphis to the mountains of East Tennessee, I encountered a beautiful and welcoming people, rich traditions, deep pride in community, and a respect for others that immediately made me feel at home.
Music is woven into Tennessee’s identity throughout the state. It can be heard in the cities, the small towns, the churches, the festivals, and the stories people tell. It is impossible to understand Tennessee without understanding the role music plays in its culture. Few people embodied that culture more completely than Dolly Parton.
A Legacy Larger Than Music
Dolly’s impact extended far beyond records sold, awards won, or concerts performed. Her generosity became an essential part of her legacy.
Whether supporting literacy through the Imagination Library, helping communities recover from disasters, or quietly assisting people who needed a helping hand, Dolly consistently used her success to improve the lives of others. Millions of children received books through the Imagination Library, one of the many examples of her lifelong commitment to giving back.
In a world where celebrity often focuses attention inward, Dolly used her platform to direct attention outward. She gave people hope. She encouraged people to dream. She demonstrated that kindness and success do not have to exist separately.
The Inspiration Behind DOLLI
As soon as I heard about Dolly’s passing, I felt compelled to begin creating. Some works begin with research, others begin with a photograph. This one began with gratitude.
I wanted to create something that honored the spirit she represented. Butterflies became an important mental element in the concept. Dolly often spoke about her love of butterflies, and they became closely associated with her public image throughout her life. As I reflected on her legacy, I found myself thinking about something she had recently shared regarding her declining health and inability to travel to events that were meaningful to her. That image stayed with me. Today, I choose to think of her differently.
Her wings are no longer limited.
